Putting yourself in others shoes, is a great way to find inspiration to write. Being empathetic, steping, if only for a moment in to others shoes makes you instantly more aware. But be careful you first have to remove your own shoes…
What outside subjects have you got under the skin of? How have you actually experienced that which you write about? In fact do you need to experience a feeling or a sensation to be able to write a believable account?

Nothing can be as good or realistic as a truth or a fact, but authors of murder and mayhem, romance and love have not experienced alll of the emotions. When researching, like a method actor, the closer you get to standing in the shoes of your character the closer you get to accuracy. You are correct, there are things I can write about that others will only imagine. There are emotions I will never be able to 100% get right, because guess work is not enough.

Ellen, I think the only true stories are the ones you have actually lived. You can be empathetic and imagine the pain and suffering of another person but as I have said to people over and over your pain is your pain. How you feel it is individual. What may seem trivial on the outside may be monstrous on the inside. One never knows. The best one can do is allow every individual the space to feel their emotions, try to emphasize with them and try to help if the help is welcome.

I don’t think you need to experience a feeling to write a believable account, as long as you can find an emotional connection to people who are in that situation. However, I do think it can create a stronger sense of feeling in your writing if you have experienced it.
To me, it’s more about being able to sympathize with or become excited about the experience. If you’re interested in the subject, then it will show in your writing.
