Leaping in on leap Year

image

I controversially asked for my husbands hand on the last leap year;
the twenty seventh of February twenty twelve. I asked his mother  how she would feel, “if it would cause you any problem at all,” said the nervous I,” we can continue as normal and he need never know.” I heard myself delivering  her an exit; an escape route.
She heard me out, her piercing blue eyes looking above her spectacles she watched me with an intensity of an opthalmic instrument. When I had finished she asked what I would do if he said no. “I will continue to love him as long as he wants me to.” I said.
She closed her book stood up, looked down at my four foot eleven frame and said, “You’ll do, close the door on the way out won’t you?”
This lady born in ninteen eighteen had lived a life that has long since gone,  I wanted to afford her the respect that her age deserved.  Unfortunately she died before the twenty ninth of February never knowing what his answer was. We married on a beach in Hawaii and he looked me in the eyes as he loudly said “You’ll do”.

      1. Ah! Love is love is love. Holding back one’s feelings because of “Girl power” seems silly when you finally meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. 😉

    1. A formidable woman, very much of the stamp that the dowager that Maggie Smith plays in Downton Abbey, i believe she liked my authentic honesty so she allowed me in.

  3. Congratulations! So much of that story has resonance for me. My father met The Husband but didn’t see us married – we are still sad about that. He had, however, given his approval: somehow he knew before I did, that it was meant to be.

    The Husband’s mother died after that and after he had proposed, but before we could tell her. Her sign of approval came, literally on her deathbed. One of the last things she said was when we arrived to visit, two days before she died, “Hello there, you two!” She had never greeted us as a twosome.

    And back to my old Dad, whose birthday would have been this month, and about whom I intend writing: the only, and best compliment I ever received from him: “You’ll do!” said with his twinkly blue eyes and a big smile.
