Charlli at the carrot ranch challenges us once more this week in 99 words Tell a story around a camp fire to join or read 🔜.presshere🔚
Aound the fire after an emotional day. The five of us together, Mum and us Sisters. We were at the river burning dad’s unwanted hoardings, his scraps and receipts from fifty five, long before any of his girls were alive. There were cards, from Fathers day’s past, faded barely distinguishable now. We read the ones we could, they were his hidden memories that belonged to the breeze. One from me to my dad, a picture of a cat we never had, a name, a smudge of a kiss greasy where my lips pressed that day long before he passed.
It is funny how a fire can evoke memories, and stories they can be the centre of occasions. Men and their burnings, barbecue’s, Autumn leaves, scouts, cubs, marshmallows and toffee apples on sticks, fun dance and fond goodbyes. When and what was your stand out fire I would love to hear… in the comments please, I get back with a quip pretty quick. 😀 😂 😁
Thank you Charlli.

Great, emotive story Ellen. I’m sure you all had stories to tell, and maybe stories to hold, as you farewelled your father’s hoardings.

On a crisp spring morning I lit a small fire on the Appalachian trail. It was a small fire, just a few twigs and small branches but just enough to perk the hot water through the course coffee grinds. The that morning I had the best cup of coffee. Just me and nature.

I was a child campfire attendee and had lots of fun with church fellowships, girl guides and family camping trips. Sadly I have let the experience become one of the past. Perhaps this prompt will revive my desire for campfire revelry.

Hi Irene, when we get further away from the salad days of camping, scouting and skinning knees, we can use a smaller garden version… without the tents to reminisce and shoot the breeze. Bring on the picnic around a bonfire, much more civilized for aging backs and bones. 😉

Rhonda, the love of my life moved here from America to marry me and make my life complete two years ago tomorrow.
She and our daughter are now happily ensconced in our blissful little home, but back then they were homesick and missing friends and family back home.
One of the things they were used to was cooking out on the huge grill Rhonda had to leave behind in Michigan, so I made sure I bought a fire basket to roast marshmallows over in our cozy little garden.
The looks of delight on both of their faces when I presented it to them on that first day still makes my chest tingle with love and will now forever remain my “stand out fire”.

Great job. I think a picture is a great tool to fire the imagination to tell a story.

Sometimes a smell can do it or an overheard phrase.☺

I haven’t thought of doing that. What a fab idea. Yes, evoke all our senses. Thanks for the advice.

I loved toasting marshmallows when we were children in the Brownies. I liked the burnt ones best!

I put one on a long stick and tried to shake it out when it caught fire. I flicked someone behind me with flobs of burning mallow. 😱 Oh and don’t let on because I was over forty… But I was a virgin mallower…
